Religious Heritage

Churches, faith, ritual and community life across generations in Lemkovyna.

Sacred places · living traditions

Faith is woven deeply into Lemko history.

Wooden churches, parish life, feast days, bells, cemeteries and family traditions appear throughout the LEMKO.org collection. This new entrance brings those materials together without replacing the original religion archive beneath it.

Wooden church at Hyrowa
Architecture as memory

Wooden churches mark the landscape of Lemkovyna.

A church can be simultaneously a place of worship, a work of architecture, a village landmark and a witness to the history of the people around it.

As the religion collection is modernized, we can connect photographs with village names, maps, historical notes and surviving archival material.

Preservation principle: religious materials can involve different jurisdictions, calendars, terminology and historical periods. The remaster should preserve the wording and provenance of original sources rather than flattening those distinctions.
Read a church as an archive

A sacred building can preserve several kinds of history at once.
