Bogdan Horbal is a historian and librarian. He is the son of parents from the Lemko villages of Bartne and Muszynka, who were deported from their Carpathian homeland during the 1947 Vistula Operation to Silesia in southwestern Poland where he was born. He studied history at the University of Wrocław in Poland (1984-1989; M.A., 1996), then in 1990 emigrated to the United States. He studied library science at Queens College in New York City (M.L.S, 1999) and works at the New York Public Library (bhorbal@nypl.org). In 2005 he returned to the University of Wrocław where he defended his PhD dissertation. Horbal is interested in the evolution of his native Lemko-Rusyn people in both Europe and North America.
