About the orchestra

The Brothers Holutiaky-Kuziany orchestra consisted of two Holutiak family members and two Kuzian family members, all originating from the Lemko village now known as Odrzechowa in the Sanok region. The orchestra's American commercial recordings preserve dance tunes, village songs, singers' names, and an extended Sanok County wedding sequence. This family-origin information comes from the archive curator's historical account.

This working catalog follows the selected Lemko-Rusyn recordings digitized for LemkoHUB, not every record in the orchestra's commercial discography. Polish instrumentals have intentionally been omitted. Titles are editorial transcriptions based on the collection's supplied documentation; original record-label orthography takes precedence when discrepancies are resolved.

Preservation note: The links lead to digitized historical audio on LemkoHUB. Recording dates, some Romanizations, and certain early Columbia matrix/label numbers remain subject to final comparison with original labels and Richard Spottswood's discography. The 29 entries below are documented selections, not a claim of complete surviving output.

* HVP-084 and HVP-085: the displayed 1948xx numbers are label/catalog numbers reported from the photographs; original master-matrix references require separate reconciliation. Other pairs are listed in documented playback or label order, not always ascending matrix order.

Sanok County wedding — an eight-side sequence

Four records document Sprosyny Sanockoho Powita (wedding invitations) and Wesilia Sanockoho Powita (wedding), Parts 1–7: HVP-084, 085, 086, and 087. The sequence is presented in order in the catalog above. A future expanded feature can include transcriptions of the spoken and sung Lemko material, original label photographs, and historical commentary.

The sorrowful year 1914

HVP-083, Columbia 27219-F, contains the two-part historical song Чотирнайцятий рочек смутний настав (The Sad Fourteenth Year Arrived), sung by Teklia Diaczek and John Maluticz. The record warrants a separate study of its lyrics and the experiences of Lemko communities during the First World War. Listen to both parts ↗

Named singers and archival notes

Columbia labels in this series name several vocalists, including Teklia Diaczek, Elena Marsecz, John Maluticz, John Serdinsky, and Anna Semczyk. These credits are valuable evidence for a future performer index. The label classifications vary between “Lemko-Ukrainian” and “Ukrainian”; both are preserved as historical commercial descriptions rather than modern reclassifications.
