Help future readers understand what an image, document or memory represents.
Record the place, approximate date, names of people if known, photographer or owner, how the image was obtained, and whether it has been colorized, restored or otherwise altered.
Record title, author or issuing body, date, language, where the original is held, and whether the submitted item is an original scan, photocopy, transcription or translation.
Record who supplied the account, their connection to the event or community, when the account was recorded, and whether the person permits their name to be published.
Preserve the original wording where it is historically significant, then add a clearly marked correction or editorial note with its source. The Peremozhne monument inscription is a good example: the photographed inscription remains part of the record even when an explanatory note corrects the historical date range.
The goal is simple: keep the story attached to the object.
